Seed Bank

Madison

AT THE INVITATION OF DIRECTOR BONNIE UTZ, RAPIDAN RIVER MASTER GARDENERS HAVE SET UP A SEED BANK IN THE MADISON COUNTY LIBRARY IN THE FIRST ROOM TO THE RIGHT AS YOU ENTER THE BUILDING. THEY WERE INVITED TO USE THE OLD CARD CATALOG FILE FOR THIS PURPOSE. EIGHT OTHER LIBRARIES ACROSS THE STATE ALREADY HAVE SEED BANKS, MANY OF THEM WERE ALSO CREATED BY MASTER GARDENERS. AFTER REACHING OUT TO THESE LIBRARIES, THEIR ENTHUSIASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS WERE INCORPORATED INTO SETTING UP OUR SEED BANK.

THE IDEA IS TO COLLECT SEEDS THIS FALL, THEN GIVE THEM AWAY IN THE SPRING ALONG WITH EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS ON SEED COLLECTING AND PLANTING FROM VIRGINIA TECH. ANYONE WILLING TO SHARE THEIR SEEDS IS TO TAKE THEM TO THE MADISON COUNTY LIBRARY AND PLACE THEM IN THE ENVELOPE AND COMPLETE THE ATTACHED INFORMATION CARD. THE CARD ASKS FOR THE NAME OF THE PLANT, YEAR THE SEEDS WERE HARVESTED, WHETHER THEY PREFER SUN OR SHADE, MOIST OR DRY CONDITIONS, ARE HEIRLOOM, AND ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. YOU MAY PREFER TO TAKE THE ENVELOPES HOME TO ADD SEEDS AND TO COMPLETE THE INFORMATION. THE FILLED ENVELOPES ARE THEN LEFT IN THE DESIGNATED BASKET AND WILL BE PLACED ALPHABETICALLY IN THE CORRECT DRAWERS BY THE MASTER GARDENERS. THERE ARE DRAWERS FOR FLOWERS, HERBS, AND FOR VEGETABLE SEEDS. LIBRARY PATRONS MAY NOW TAKE THE SEEDS THEY NEED. THE LOWES IN RUCKERSVILLE GENEROUSLY DONATED MANY OF THEIR 2018 SEED PACKETS TO GET US STARTED. THEY ARE TECHNICALLY OUT OF DATE, BUT SHOULD BE VIABLE FOR 2019 UNTIL THERE ARE ENOUGH SEEDS DONATED FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS TO CONTINUE THE PROJECT.
THE MADISON COUNTY LIBRARY AND MASTER GARDENERS ARE DELIGHTED TO WORK TOGETHER TO OFFER THIS NEW SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
